Thalassemia Unit Inaugurated

A Thalassemia Day care unit was inaugurated on 11th July 2002, by the Honourable Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit at St. Stephen's Hospital. The unit will function in association with Thalassemics India.

Thalassemia is genetic disorder where the bone marrow produces defective haemoglobin. As a result, children with thalassemia become anaemic and need regular (monthly) transfusion of blood. India has about 1 lakh children suffering from thalassemia and more than 8000 children with thalassemia are born every year. Delhi has about 1300 thalassemia patients.

The facility at St. Stephen's Hospital will help thalassemic children to get their transfusions conveniently. The unit will undertake four blood transfusions a day and the cost per transfusion has been kept at Rs. 250. The medical and nursing support will be provided free of charge by St. Stephen's Hospital. The Indian Red Cross Society provides blood for transfusion in these children.

The thalassemia gene is commonly present in certain communities and this can be detected by screening tests for thalassemia. Facilities for diagnosis of thalassemia, screening and genetic counseling are also available at St. Stephen's Hospital.

MARGADARSHAN

St. Stephen's Hospital has started a free telephone helpline called Margdarshan. People with emotional problems like anxiety/stress, depression, phobias and suicidal ideas can now talk directly to a mental health professional and get instant guidance and help.

In our society mental problems are associated with stigma. People are unwilling to go to a psychiatrist/psychologist for the fear of being labeled mad. In today's fast paced life interpersonal relationships are put under severe stress. Day to day existence, competitions at every level in life and job insecurities further add to one's problems in life.

'Margdarshan' help line offers confidential and reliable help to people in distress.

It will also help to remove superstitions about mental illness.

The free telephone helpline offers an interface between the trained professional and the common man. People can seek help for their mental problems without going to the hospital. Whenever medication or detail investigation is necessary the helpline will advise the patient to visit the hospital personally or to consult a psychiatrist.

St. Stephen's Hospital has been serving all strata of society. This is a new endeavor in the field of mental health and the first of its kind. This is yet another effort by St. Stephen's Hospital to deliver better health care to the community.
