Child care has always
been an area of major concern and therefore an integral part of the
services offered by St. Stephen's Hospital since its inception. The
department has a team of dedicated and qualified staff
comprising of five full time paediatric consultants, Thirteen residents
and specially trained nursing personnel. The department besides
taking care of over 7000 babies born in this hospital every year also
runs a full fledged paediatric ward and out patient service.
Our Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit has the latest equipments that are required to
deliver efficient tertiary care to the neonates including ventilators,
incubators, open care systems, neonatal ultrasound machine,
cardio-respiratory and blood pressure monitors, infusion pumps, pulse
oxymeters and phototherapy units.
The OPD Services
include daily general and private OPDs, Special Clinics, Well Baby
Clinics and Free Clinics for poor patients. Preventive paediatrics is an
integral part of our OPD Services through our Well Baby Clinics and
immunisation in post natal wards.
Our paediatric
department is a referral centre for tertiary care of sick children from
North Delhi and nearby colonies and villages. Special paediatric clinics
are held at Nandnagri Community Centre.
In the paediatric
ward specialised and intensive care is provided to sick babies. The
paediatric ward has 49 beds and a 6 bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
The PICU is manned round the clock by postgraduate residents. It has 2
ventilator cots. There is a provision of free beds both on children's
ward and the neonatal nursery for the indigent.
The department
provides health care for about 120 orphans with the Missionaries of
Charity under the supervision of Dr. R Beri. A project to provide play
therapy for these children won
the Sir James Flett Gold Medal of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics.
The five full time
paediatric consultants, all have general interests. Dr. Beri also has
special interest in Paediatric Nephrology, Dr. Nirmal Kumar in
Paediatric Neurology and Dr. Saroj Singh in Paediatric Pulmonology. Dr.
J Puliyel looks after paediatric diabetis and behavioral
disorders. Full middle grade cover is provided by 8 Post Graduate Senior
Registrars. There are 5 Senior House Officers (SHO) who are Diplomate of
National Board (DNB) trainees. SHOs in the last six months of their
training take duties on the registrar rota.
At present we have
one Research Fellow Post funded by the Department of Science and
Technology of the Government of India.
The nursing services
are led by Sister A. Isaac Anora and Sr. Rose Mary.
DNB Training
We take 2 SHOs each
year for the 3 year DNB training programme. Candidates must have passed
part I of the DNB to qualify. As per hospital policy, preference
is given to Christian doctors and those sponsored by Christian mission
hospitals. Dedicated teaching time has a schedule for Journal Club
Meetings, Seminars, Presentations, Weekly Quiz and Monthly Tests.
Postings with the Community Health Department and with specialties like
ENT and Ophthalmology and Dermatology are arranged. We also
register two DCH Registrars each year for the 2 year DNB training.
PGDMCH
Training
The
department is a Skill Development Centre for the Post Graduate
Diploma in Maternal and Child Health (PGDMCH) and Dr. J Puliyel is
Academic Counsellor to the Indira Gandhi National Open University.
