Spinal Injury Rehabilitation

Patients with Spinal Injury (injury to the backbone causing paralysis of the upper/lower limbs) are usually inadequately managed in most of the medical setups because of lack of well coordinated services and awareness for rehabilitation. Since it's inception, the St. Stephen's Hospital has become one of the largest Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Centers in Northern India in the private sector. At present, the Department is treating more number of patients as compared to any other Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitations Centers. During the last three years we have rehabilitated about 175 patients of Spinal Cord Injury and Paraplegia (i.e. paralysis of lower half of the body) due to Tuberculosis of the spine. We have been catering to patients even from neighboring countries, especially Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. Our follow-up studies show that the patients, rehabilitated our center,  are doing well in the society. Our center excels in bladder and bowel management of the paraplegic patients.

With the opening of the Artificial Limb and Appliance Center (ALC), we have started providing good quality calipers and other appliances for the benefit of paragraphic and quadriplegic (paralysis of all four limbs) patients. As the incidence of paraplegia due to Trauma and Tuberculosis of the spine, is on the rise, we hope to expand our bed strength to treat more and more  of such patients. Along with medical management we perform all types of surgeries, required for treatment and rehabilitation of these patients. Encouraged by the quality of our rehabilitation services, many other hospitals have started referring their paraplegic and post operative spinal cases to our center.

Stroke and Head Injury Rehabilitation

In modern times more and more persons are becoming disabled because of stroke and head injury. The number of stroke patients, rehabilitated in our department is second to that of spinal cord injury. Ours is the first private hospital in the Northern India, which provides comprehensive rehabilitation to these patients.

Surgical Rehabilitation

This department  is the first Rehabilitation Department, providing full fledged surgical rehabilitations services amongst all the hospitals in Delhi. Different rehabilitative surgical procedures include

Orthopaedic Procedures: Contracture release, corrective osteotomies, arthrodesis, tendon transfers, etc.

Urosurgical Procedures: Suprapubic cytostomy, cystoscopy, cystoscopic removal of bladder stones, etc.

Plastic Surgical Procedures: Skin contracture release, skin grafting, myo-cutaneous & fasciocutaneous flaps, etc.

Artificial Limb Centre (ALC)

Our ALC is the first well equipped Orthotic and Prosthetic Center in private sector in Delhi. The stress for quality maintenance is the driving force in running of this center. All the artificial limbs and appliances are prescribed after thorough evaluation, fabricated in the center under strict supervision  by the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialists and are checked again, before being delivered to the patients. We also make all the aids and appliances for the patients, being referred from the other hospitals. This is done at a competitive  cost vis-a-vis the general market. Some of the items, like cervical collars, belts, braces, crutches and wheelchairs are available ready made at the ALC at  very reasonable prices.
