Department of casualty
Emergency and Critical Care
The Emergency Medicine Program at St. Stephen’s Hospital attends to approximately 70,000 patients yearly. Our admission rate through the Emergency Department exceeds 10,000 patients annually.
Effective immediately, all patients who come into our Emergency Departments will be assessed by a Registered Nurse within 15 minutes of registration. However, should a patient’s condition appear to be life-threatening or serious upon arrival, the patient will be assessed immediately by the triage nurse and, if required, will be immediately directed to a treatment area for assessment and stabilization by emergency nursing staff.
There are 3 intensive care units (ICUs) and 3 step-down units to provide key support for the acutely ill patients seen at the casualty.
