St. Stephen's Hospital is constantly involved in training and education in several areas, the most prominent of these being the School of Nursing and the DNB Programme for Doctors.

 

School of Nursing

 

St. Stephen's Hospital has been training nurses, almost from it's inception. Its founder Sr. Alice Wilkinson, a pioneer in Nursing Edicuation was a co-author of the constitution of the Nursing Counclil of India. The School of Nursing was established in 1908 and training of 'B' grade nurses was started. Preparation of students for 'A' grade diploma was started in 1952. Students who successfully completed the three years General Nursing and Midwifery course are recommended for the diploma examinations of the Punjab Nurses Registration Council.

 

DNB Programme

 

The 'Diplomate of National Board (DNB)' is awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), since 1975 when it was established. St. Stephen's Hospital is one of the 135 accredited institutions for this purpose in India. The training programme in this hospital commenced in 1990. The duration of the course is 3 years after passing primary DNB Examination as stipulated by N.B.E. Candidates are being trained and sent up from 14 specialties in the hospital.

The hospital conducts courses in the following Para Medical Disciplines by Indian Medical Association, Christian Medical Association of India and Rehabilitation Council of India.

Certificate Course in Healthcare Waste Management

 

Conducted by IGNOU in Collaboration with WHO (SEARO)

Programme Study Centre – 0764(P)

 

IGNOU and WHO (SEARO) launched the certificate programme in Healthcare Waste Management in the South-East Asia Region countries in 2006. St Stephen's Hospital is a programme sub-centre. The candidates have a six-day contact period at St Stephen's Hospital during their six months' tenure. We have had students from various fields such as Doctors, Nurses, Lab-Technicians, Dentists and Management Faculty attending this programme.

The contact period for students admitted at St Stephen's Hospital for January 2007 session will be from Monday, 23rd April to Friday, the 27th  April 2007 .

 

 

Doing an elective at St. Stephens Hospital

Foreign students are allowed to do elective at St. Stephens Hospital. There is an elective coordinator who will organize the programme with the specialities, the students choose. The students will be provided food and accommodation.
