About the Programme

St. Stephen's Hospital has been training nurses, almost from it's inception. Its founder Sr. Alice Wilkinson, a pioneer in Nursing Education was a co-author of the constitution of the Nursing Council of India. In the early days training was mostly informal and work-oriented. The School of Nursing was established in 1908 and training of 'B' grade nurses was started. Preparation of students for 'A' grade diploma was started in 1952. Students who successfully completed the three years General Nursing and Midwifery course are recommended for the diploma examinations of the Punjab Nurses Registration Council.

The members of teaching staff are well qualified persons with wide experience, they are meticulously chosen for their expertise in different  fields of specialization. The school has a well stocked library and is equipped with modern teaching aids, with the 600 bed general hospital to back up the school, students have ample opportunities to gain wide experience in all departments of medicine and surgery besides paediatrics.

Nursing is a rewarding career that offers a bright and satisfying future for young girls, with a sense of service, who enjoy working with people. As members of the modern health team nurses render a significant service in the care of the sick and in the prevention of illness and injury.

Increasing number of trained nurses are needed to fill responsible positions as experts in bed-side nursing services and researchers seeking new and better ways of meeting the nursing needs of patients.

Curriculum                                                                                            

Course will be conducted as per the Indian Nursing Council Syllabus and it will commence in the month of October. Medium of instruction for the course is English.

 

Eligibility

Age

  • Candidates seeking admission to the General Nursing Course must be unmarried girls. they must have completed 17 years and must be below 25 years on 1st August.  Minimum height should be 4 ft. 10 inches.

Educational Qualifications

  • Applicant must have passed pre-degree or 10+2 or Intermediate examination of any recognized University or Board, with English and General Science as main subjects & English is compulsory.
  • Candidates should have above 50% marks in aggregate for 10+2 / Pre Degree and must have passed in the first attempt.

Others

  • Candidates seeking admission must unmarried girls.
  • Students will not be allowed to get married during training.

 

How To Apply

Application forms and the prospectus can be collected from the School of Nursing. The application forms are to be filled in the candidate's own hand writing and should reach the School of Nursing  before the last date specified in the prospectus. The forms reaching after the last date, shall not be entertained. The Admit Card will be despatched to the candidate to be produced at the time of entrance test and no candidate shall be admitted to the examination hall with out the admit card.

Documents to be attached

  • One copy of the photograph duly attested is to be pasted on the form in the space provided for and other two attested copies are to be pasted on the Admit Cards. 
  • One copy of certificate of Class X & XII/Pre Degree duly attested
  • One copy of Mark sheet of the examinations passed (Class X & XII/Pre Degree)
  • One copy of the certificate of Date of Birth duly attested
  • Character certificate from the head of the institution last attended
  • SC/ST Certificate from the competent authority, if applicable
  • Certificate in the form of an undertaking from the parent/legal guardian of the candidate promising to meet all financial obligations of the candidate during her training.

The originals of the above mentioned testimonials shall be brought by the applicant at the time of entrance test.

 

Selection Process

The candidates who are found eligible on preliminary scrutiny of applications and other documents, will be called for a test to be held at the hospital. The date of the test will be intimated to the eligible candidates. Those candidates who are successful in the test will be required to appear before a board for an interview. Interview call will be according to the merit. The decision of the Board will be final.

List of candidates selected for admission will be displayed on the notice board near the security office of the hospital.

All original certificates as mentioned in the prospectus are to be submitted at the time of admission.

Service Agreement

All student nurses shall be required to serve St. Stephen's Hospital or it's sister institutions as a staff for a period of three years after passing the General Nursing  and Midwifery Examination of the Registration Council and undertake to keep their original certificates in the custody of the hospital till the completion of three years. They will be required to execute an agreement to the effect in the prescribed agreement forms available in the office of the School of Nursing.

After expiry of the bond period the hospital may retain the services of such nurses as are found suitable, or normal terms and conditions by mutual agreement. The hospital does not guarantee employment to those who are not thus absorbed.

The Diploma and Registration certificate in respect of nurses who are liable to service under bond will be retained by the hospital and will be released  only on completion of the bond period.

 

Examinations

The first phase of training covers a period of three months. The phase termed preliminary training stage forms part of the three years General Nursing and Midwifery course. Students are required to secure not less than 50% marks in each subject in the examination conducted at the end of this phase. Students who fail to obtain the minimum marks will be terminated from the training.

First, second and final examinations are conducted by the Punjab Nurses Registration Council. Selection tests are held by the School. Students who obtain minimum 50% marks in these will be recommended for the council examinations, provided the standards of their achievement in class room assignment and clinical area are satisfactory.

Supplementary Examinations

Council/Board may hold supplementary examination after six months of the annual examinations.

  • If the student fails in one theory paper (However she may be allowed to join the next year of study). She will be required to appear for a supplementary examination held subsequently in the subjects she has failed in.
  • Passing the Practical examination is compulsory (for promotion to the next year of study).
  • If a student fails in two papers, she will not be promoted to the next year of study unless she clears the previous paper.
  • Relevant changes in the PNRC rules will be applicable to the School of Nursing also.

 

 Vacation

Students will be granted 30 days vacation in each calendar year. This is subject to the students making satisfactory progress in their studies. Vacation not availed when assigned will be forfeited.

When the student proceeds on Annual Leave, Parents/Local Guardian shall take full responsibility of their ward being taken from the hostel and brought back to the hostel.

 

Hostel Facility

Accommodation will be provided to the students in a separate section of the nurses hostel. Student nurses are required to live in Nurses Hostel during the training.

Students Mess is common for students and trained nurses. The mess is managed by the mess staff under the direction of a committee composed of  representatives of students and trained nurses. The overall management and control of the mess rests with the Nursing Superintendent.

Facilities are provided for indoor as well as outdoor games and other forms of recreation.

The prospectus and the application form will be available in the office of the School of Nursing for Rs. 200/-. If you would like to get the prospectus by post, you may send a demand draft for Rs. 250/- drawn in favour of St. Stephen's Hospital, payable at Delhi.
